Aaron Strout, Vice President of New Media at Mzinga posted a great list on his blog of his top 10 social media lessons learned. Incidently, Aaron will be a speaker on “Creating Your Social Media Strategy” at our upcoming Social Media Strategies Conference. Here is his list.
Top 10 Social Media Lessons:
- 10 – Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back. It may make you feel good but others won’t appreciate it.
- 9 – Make sure you spend as much time commenting, responding and reading other people’s content as you do creating your own.
- 8 – Every day I a point of calling out others blogs, Twitter updates or FF activity. Remember its all about them, not you!
- 7 – If you don’t podcast, start. It doesn’t have to be for anyone but you. I do 1 every morning on http://utterli.com/ from my cell.
- 6 – When you read blogs, don’t just follow the big A-listers. Some of my faves are http://scottmonty.com and http://www.thesocialorganization.com
- 5 – Always ask other people what they’ve learned about tapping into community/SM for business. You’ll be surprised what you learn.
- 4 – On Twitter be social. Talk about work AND social things. Too much of either can be a turn off.
- 3 – As @scobleizer reminded me, make your content count. See this post for more details – http://is.gd/3dMG
- 2 – As important as online social networking is, OFFLINE is equally, if not MORE important. Make a point of meeting people in person.
- 1 – As my boss, @blibert, keeps reminding me, KEEP IT IN A BOX!!! http://is.gd/193L

Give me a break. What a lame list. This is business 101 stuff. What an egocentric world we are creating that we have to be reminded of these basic practices.

I agree with andrew, I was expecting more of a generic business 101 list here.
