Recession Proofing Your Web Site

By Reshma Kumar at September 28, 2008 0 Comments

If you Google ‘recession proofing‘, you’ll find everything from recession proofing your job, life, diet, vacations, finances, wedding, retirement, etc. And, unlike other recession proof industries like healthcare, food, debt collection, tax filing, career services, energy, and tobacco, booze, porn, and gambling, high tech is not one of the recession proof industries. Most of us manage web sites, work on sites, and run businesses on sites. So, we are about to or are already walking a virtual tightrope. But before we all rush for the nearest exit, lets think about this for a minute. How do we position our Web sites to weather the storm of this recession?!

Here are Ten Suggestions for your Web Site Recession Survival Kit:

1. Improve site navigation - both navigational system as well as in-site cross linking.
2. Streamline buy process - build in system intelligence, less page level navigation, etc.
3. Improve site load time - faster is better on the information superhighway.
4. Improve SEO/M - improve your findability and chances of appearing on page one of Google’s search results.
5. Simplify content - use good Web writing techniques, and textual and graphical content that evoke persuasion, emotion, and trust.
6. Remove clutter and noise - remove elements that are not resonating with users and that take away from the core message.
7. Optimize landing pages - because these are gating pages that determine whether or not users delve further into your site, use multivariate and split A/B testing to get them right.
8. Improve site usability - stick to good usability practice. Don’t over-design to be overly cute or different from other sites or out-innovate yourself out of the competition.
9. Improve site features - add site features and functionality that are appropriate and relevant to your site and business and that enhance the user experience. You want to keep up with this stuff on your site so that your company’s brand doesn’t appear out-dated without falling victim to adding gratuitous bells and whistles.
10. Leverage social media - use social media as part of your integrated marketing campaign to engage, interact, and build relationships with new and existing customers, and to reach them where they are versus relying on them coming to you.
What are you doing to recession proof your site?
