Motrin, the maker of pain relief meds, and subsidiary of parent company, Johnson & Johnson, has just made a major faux pas with its new Social Media Video Campaign “Wear My Baby”. Mothers everywhere are outraged and the backlash is reverberating around the Web. The Twitter chatter at #motrin and #motrinmoms is non-stop. YouTube videos in response to the ad, voicing outrage have also spawned. The protests happening in Los Angeles and San Francisco against the passing of Prop 8 have taken from the streets to the Web. Proponents of gay marriage have launched a new Website, JointheImpact.com, to organize supporters in an international protest. MySpace and Facebook are also actively being leveraged. A Facebook group called “1,000,000 Million Strong Against Newly Passed Prop 8″ has amassed about 68,000 members. The Obama Campaign successfully used the power of the Web and especially Social Media during the campaign for Presidency. They used blogs, videos (they even had Barack TV), chat, mobile, social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace were a first for a presidential election, Twitter for micro-blogging, RSS, social bookmarking, music, and lots of downloads and photos didn’t hurt either. The ANA (Association of National Advertisers) held its 2008 Annual “Masters of Marketing” Conference from October 16-19, 2008, in Orlando, FL. The theme of the conference was Growth, which held great importance given the current economic climate that the marketing industry faces.

YouTube has a great Video Your Vote campaign right now where they are encouraging users to shoot videos of their voting experiences at their polling stations and share the experience with others on YouTube. The idea, being to hold your democracy accountable and report any problems encountered. This is being done in conjunction with PBS. Similarly, Twitter has what they’re calling a Twitter Vote Report where voters can tweet their reports on how the vote is really going during the election.
