If the series of tests that Google engineers are doing on their search portal is any indication of what may soon become of the Google Search, then we might be looking at Social-powered Google search engine in the near future. Russian startup, Yandex, is the most popular search engine in Russia with 55% of the market compared with Google’s 21%. Currently, there are 33 million Russians online (as many people as in Britain and more than France) and that is expected to grow to 60 million in the next five years (by 2013).

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s Senior Vice President of the Search, Portal & Advertising Platform Group was the opening keynote at Search Engine Strategies Conference this week. He spoke on Microsoft approaches search and how the company intends to shape trends in search development and how they intend to exploit them. Nadella assured the audience that Microsoft is pursuing these things with a long-term perspective and the intent of staying in the fight.

The Yahoo Search Blog announced they have made “significant enhancements” to how they show news results in the web search results. Yahoo is now showing news results in different positions throughout the web search results, based on their new “News Direct Display (DD)” algorithm. American Airlines and Google have reached an agreement over it lawsuit claiming Google’s search engine directed users to advertisements for the airline’s competitors. American was seeking unspecified damages for trademark infringement.
American was upset that when Google users entered search terms such as AAdvantage, the trademark name of its frequent-flier program, the results included Web sites that had no connection to American. The airline said the results could confuse consumers and divert customers from its own Web site.
