Cisco today announced the acquisition of Jabber, a provider of presence and messaging software.
The acquisition will enable Cisco to embed presence and messaging services “in the network” and provide rich aggregation capabilities to users through both on-premise and on-demand solutions, across multiple platforms including Cisco WebEx® Connect and Cisco Unified Communications said the company.
Cisco has to find new markets fast as its core market for router is slowing down. Hence the company has been on a buying spree acquiring Webex, Postpath and now Jabber and tranforming itself into a software play. The company has formed More»

Cisco’s chief John Chambers routinely says “Market transitions are built on catching them right, and if you miss them it’s almost impossible to recover.” Hence Cisco hopes to capitalize on the next market transition by teaming up with Russia’s Almaz Capital Partners to create a $60 million fund for the region’s technology, media and telecoms sector. “Targets could include communications service providers, media companies, and content development companies,” said the More»

Some call it social media excellence some just say we’ve gone crazy…whatever you call it, it seems to be working.
As an extension to the social media efforts that we’re leveraged for Cisco’s ASR launch, Cisco announced a tournament around the EDGE QUEST game where they are offering $10,000 cash plus a Cisco ASR 1002 router to the sole winner. Not a bad deal for playing a game but the competition is stiff with a top score More»

Plaxo today announced that they have just signed an agreement to be acquired by Comcast. Details of the price were not disclosed but it is rumored to be in the $140 - $175 million range.
The company blog says “Plaxo Pulse is to become central to creating a unified “Social Media” experience across the web and television”. Not sure what exactly that means for Comcast? Given that 75% of Plaxo’s users are business users. I am surprised that Plaxo was not acquired by Google or Cisco.

My guess is that companies have little to worry about. Several prominent bloggers More»

That’s what Intel wants you to do with the launch of their new website called CoolSW. They are using collective intelligence to help sift through the millions of software companies to find the best one. They’ve created a social ranking system that allows them to find what’s “Cool.” I have to admit the software that currently has the most votes in the ‘digital home’ category is pretty cool. It’s a web service that allows people to draw More»
