Social networks have apparently permeated the parenting world as well. In a study by NewMedia Metrics and The Parenting Group, although both gen X and Y mothers consider the internet a key resource for parenting information, gen Y mothers seem to prefer the wisdom of the crowds opting for social networks, blogs, and video sharing sites.

According to the a published by PRWeek/Manning Selvage & Lee, 28 percent of senior managers see increased spending in consumer generated media (CGM).
Marketers also view CGM as a tool for supporting brand and reputation. More than six in 10 say CGM is important for creating brand awareness (68%), building brands (64%), and being perceived as an innovator (60%). A sizeable proportion of marketers even tie CGM directly to ROI, with 43% saying it is important to sales.

PRWeek reports that a new study conducted by Burson-Marsteller has found that 15% of Fortune 500 companies communicate with consumers via blogs.
The survey, conducted in February and March this year, found that 74 Fortune 500 companies actively maintain blogs, many of them technology-related corporations. The top four industries with blogs were: Computers and Office Equipment (IBM, Dell, etc.); Network and Other Communications Equipment (Motorola, Lucent Technologies, etc.); Semiconductors and Other Electrical Components (Intel, AMD, etc.); and Internet Services and Retailing (Amazon, Google, etc.). Most corporate blogs would likely agree with the assessment that they are unimaginative failures. They all start with the best of intentions - they need a blog because everyone else has one; it’s the new new ‘thing’; and then they justify it as a means of communicating with and engaging their customers. When Tim Russert died on June 13, NBC held off reporting the news for almost two hours and asked other TV networks to hold off reporting it so that his family vacationing in Italy could be notified first. However, long before Mr. Russert’s death was reported on air, it was on the Web, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

One of the most unassuming but influential players in Silicon Valley is Matt Mullenweg, the key developer of Wordpress blogging software and owner his associated anti-spam company Automattic.

Enterprise 2.0 will become a $4.6 billion industry by 2013, according to a report by Forrester Research. The top priority for enterprises will be social media applications and tools and most of the money is expected to flow to social networking tools and mashups.

A report issued by Society for New Communications Research reveals that many companies are adopting social media as a marketing tool however they are struggling to find effective metrics.
The report is based on findings from a survey of 297 advertising, marketing, PR and corporate communications professionals, 57% felt social media tools are becoming more valuable, 27% of whom say that social media is a core element of their communications strategy.

Cisco is facing a lawsuit after an employee - who happend to be in charge of Cisco’s Intellectual Property Division - criticized other companies on his personal blog.
