Google G1 Android Phone Ringing In This Week

The newest entrant into the mobile handheld device market and clear would-be competitor to Apple’s iPhone is about the hit the stores next week. Google’s G1 phone will be available for purchase on October 22 exclusively through T-Mobile. G1 runs on the Android open source operating system and comes pre-loaded with mobile optimized versions of the following Google apps: Search, Maps, Gmail, Calendar, Talk, and YouTube. It does not synchronize with Outlook or allow the use of Microsoft’s exchange server. Surprise, surprise!

HTC Dream Phone - Like an iPhone, but with keys!

Infoworld reports that HTC is developing their Android based phone. Initial reports make the Dream look like a very solid competitor to the Apple iPhone. The dream will have both a full touchscreen and a qwerty keyboard. Apple iPhone critics often complain about the lack of a real keyboard, so this may be a key Dream advantage.
Infoworld also reports that Samsung is probably developing a similar phone based on the Android platform.

Tonight PBS covered the smart phone market, and asked for input from Andrew Seybold, a prominent expert on the mobile sector. However Seybold said something that really seemed questionable:
ANDREW SEYBOLD: As much as I respect Google, the wireless industry can’t be an extension of the Internet because wireless bandwidth is finite. It’s a fixed resource, and it is shared bandwidth.
