Daya Baran, President, WebGuild
A chance meeting in university with Bill Gates, co-Founder of Microsoft, sparked an interest in the Web for me that still continues today. Mr. Gates talked about Gopher and how one day it will connect the entire universe. I was fascinated and believed that Microsoft was the company that was going to own the Web. I invested every penny I had in MSFT and before long had to take time off university to manage my portfolio. I learned everything I could about Microsoft, its technology, and how Wall Street valued tech companies. I became a sales person for a tech focused fund and took the sales from $0 to $181 million in nine months. Within a year with assets of over $1 billion, the company was acquired. I continued to invest in emerging Silicon Valley tech companies such as Juniper, Exodus, Infospace, Brocade, and Webex. Later, I started a series of startups in online money management, storage, and music recommendation but they were ahead of their time and never got much market traction. Today, I run the WebGuild whose mission is to organize information and services for Web professionals. I am a great believer in the power of the Web, its ability to empower and positively impact people, and make the world a better place. Rate this Speaker |
