Browser Trends: What's Next in Web Development
Danny Goodman, Author and Consultant, DannyG.com Danny Goodman is a leading authority on internet technologies
that impact content and application development for Web browsers. As an author
of bestselling books on the subject, his recent titles include JavaScript Bible
(4th edition, 2001, Wiley), Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference (2nd
edition, 2002, O'Reilly & Associates), and JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook (2003,
O'Reilly & Associates). His numerous articles appear at the O'Reilly Network, Apple
Developer Central, and Netscape DevEdge web sites. Danny also provides
contract programming and consulting services, specializing in the fields of
JavaScript, Document Object Model (DOM) compatibility, and standards compliance across
multiple browsers. His client list includes many top corporate names in the
software industry.
Before the prevalence of the World Wide Web, Danny concentrated on computer
technologies in the Macintosh community, such as AppleScript and HyperCard. One
book title, The Complete HyperCard Handbook, first published by Bantam Books
in August 1987, claimed honors as the best selling Macintosh book and fastest
selling computer book in the history of the industry. His HyperCard Handbook
and HyperCard Developer's Guide have both received Best Product-Specific Book
awards from the Computer Press Association (1987 and 1988, respectively).
Danny Goodman's Macintosh Handbook (1993), a radical departure from traditional
computer books, won Danny's third CPA award. The book's four-color design was
created in collaboration with world-class information architect, Richard Saul
Wurman.
To demonstrate the capabilities of products and technologies he was writing
about, Danny has also authored commercial software. In November 1987,
Activision published his Focal Point and Business Class programs, the first
HyperCard-based products to reach retail distribution. These two products (a personal
information manager and an international travel resource) received the Software
Publishers Association awards for best products in three categories for 1987.
Focal Point won the MacGuide Golden Gavel award based on subscribers'
write-in ballots for products in 1988. In November 1988, Focal Point II shipped
under Mediagenic's TENpointO label to critical acclaim.
Danny was born in Chicago, Illinois during the Truman administration. He
earned a B.A. and M.A. in Classical Antiquity from the University of Wisconsin -
Madison. He moved to California in 1983, and now lives in a small San
Francisco area coastal community, where he alternates views between computer screens
and the Pacific Ocean.
