Cool Doesn't Cut It:
Building a Usable Web Site
Cool no longer rules! Adding fancy graphics or a neat animation may win
you a "Cool Site of the Day" award, but probably won’t help your users
get their work done. As a web designer in a business environment, you
need to understand how your site’s design can best help them find the
information they’re looking for.
This presentation shares the results of our latest research about what works and
what doesn’t on the web. You’ll see examples from real web sites that illustrate
what we found. Learn why graphic design wasn’t nearly as important as we thought,
and animation and lots of white space can actually hurt. We’ll discuss why a "shell"
strategy that separates navigation and content may not be the way to go. You’ll
find out why good links play such a key role in helping users find information, and
see examples of the problems users encounter with search engines.
Audience: This talk is for all members of the web development team, including
graphic designers, interface designers, content providers, programmers, editors,
usability professionals, marketers, and project leaders. Experience in developing
a web site is recommended but not required.
