Research In Motion (RIMM) is halting production of the PlayBook, and might stop producing the tablets all together, according to Barron’s.
The story cites a research report from Collins Stewart chip analyst John Vinh. Here’s the key paragraph from Vinh:
While Quanta last week acknowledged that it had laid off a significant number of production workers from a factory focused on producing the PlayBook, our research indicates that the ODM has essentially halted production of the tablet. Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIMM has canceled development of additional tablet projects.
RIM is the latest to give up on the tablet market. Recently, HP (HPQ) stopped production of it TouchPad due to poor sales. RIM, HP, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Samsung and a whole host of companies are trying to chip away at Apple’s lead in the tablet market.
