Obama Dinner With Silicon Valley Tech Bosses

By Daya Baran at February 17, 2011 5 Comments    Share

President Obama had a meeting with 12 silicon valley tech leaders to discuss innovation initiatives, creating jobs and increasing exports to boost the U.S. economy.

The closed-door session with the technology leaders was held at the home of John Doerr, a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Others in attendance included:

  • Steve Jobs, chairman and CEO, Apple
  • Larry Ellison, co-founder and CEO, Oracle
  • John Chambers, CEO and chairman, Cisco Systems
  • Mark Zuckerberg, founder, president and CEO, Facebook
  • Eric Schmidt, chairman and CEO, Google
  • Reed Hastings, CEO, NetFlix
  • John Hennessy, President, Stanford University
  • Carol Bartz, president and CEO, Yahoo!
  • Art Levinson, chairman and former CEO, Genentech
  • Steve Westly, Founder, Westly Group
  • Dick Costello, CEO, Twitter

There were many tech leaders that were missing from the dinner. It is almost a joke inviting Caral Bartz, CEO, Yahoo when the company is laying off staff. How about Dick Costello, CEO, Twitter what can he really do?

Obama should have invited the following:

  • Sam Palmisano, CEO of IBM
  • Leo Apotheker, CEO of HP
  • Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon
  • Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft
  • Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com

Obama has promised to fund tax credits for research and development; to reform the bogged-down patent system; and to blanket the country with high-speed wireless-Internet connections.

Ten of the technology leaders who dined with President Obama have contributed nearly $1 million in the past decade to Obama and candidates for Congress, most of them Democrats, according to an analysis by MAPLight.org of Berkeley. Source: SF Chronicle

  3. Daya Baron, with the exception of HP and Salesforce CEOs none of your mentioned uninvited CEOs are in Silicon Valley (Microsoft CEO – Seattle headquarters, IBM CEO – New York headquarters, Amazon CEO – Seattle headquarters). Plus HP CEO is way too new – Larry Ellison wouldn't have liked that anyway. Twitter has moved to a new site, just because they need a bigger place perhaps for new hires. BTWY it is all a show – these are companies that are now at a forefront of media. You could argue the same thing for Facebook (overvalued and not a big company by headcount ~1500), Netflix, Twitter etc.

  4. With the exception of HP and Salesforce.com (which is really SF, not SV), the other companies are NOT from Silicon Valley. That's why they're not there. How did Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg get the lucky seat next to the pres. At first I thought the lady in front was Meg Whitman, but no way in hell would she be invited.
