
The Oracle of Silicon Valley, Larry Ellison answered a call by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Warren Buffet to pledge and publicly commit to giving away at least half of his fortune.
Ellison who topped the list of best-paid executives of public companies during the past decade, receiving $1.84 billion in compensation, gives hundreds of millions to educational and medical institutions in places like India.
“Until now, I have done this giving quietly — because I have long believed that charitable giving is a personal and private matter,” wrote the Ellison in a blog post founder wrote in a letter posted on the Giving Pledge’s website.
Other Bay Area billionaires that pledge include movie maker George Lucas, financier Tom Steyer, venture capitalist John Doerr, Business Wire founder Lorry Lokey, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, Herb Sandler, who built the Oakland-based parent of World Savings Bank, now part of Wells Fargo. Other Billionaires pledging include New York Mayor Bloomberg and CNN founder Ted Turner. The fund has received $125 billion in committed pledges to date.
