According to new research for Nielsen, Americans spend a third of their online time (36 percent) communicating and networking across social networks, blogs, personal email and instant messaging. That was a 43 percent increase from the previous year. Social networks accounted for 22.7% of their time spent online followed by online games at 10.2% and email email at 8.3%.

However on the mobile web, Americans spent a bulk of their time on email, followed by portal and then social networking.
