
Starting July 1, 2010 every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection. All telecommunications companies providing broadband services to resident in Finland are obligated to provide a minimum 1Mbps speed starting July 1. Findland has vowed to connect everyone to a 100Mbps connection by 2015. It is believed up to 96% of the population are already online and that only about 4,000 homes still need connecting to comply with the law. The UK has promised a minimum connection of at least 2Mbps to all homes by 2012 but it is not a right. President Barack Obama has pledged to put broadband in every home. However, according to Akamai’s “State Of the Internet” report the United States’ internet speed has actually decreased by 2.4% year-over-year from 2008 to 2009. The United States actually ranked 18 out of the 203 nations tested in terms of average connection speeds, falling behind speed leaders like South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
