Web address ending with a .xxx extension for porn sites are closer to getting approved. The Internet addresses ruling body, ICANN, has agreed to re-evaluate the application for .xxx web addresses.
Approval of .xxx would add it to the list of other top level domain like .com, .net, and .org. Website addresses bearing .xxx extensions would clearly denote such sites as porn websites and would, in essence, create an online red light district.
This would make it easier to filter out such sites for safe browsing but many porn sites would not be required to have .xxx domains and those already existing, are unlikely to change their domain names which they have already established, are known by, and can be found by.
U.S. company ICM Registry has been pushing for the .xxx approval and argues that .xxx is big business – there are several million adult top-level domain names already out there, there are already 110,000 reservations for the new domain, and they expect to make $30 million a year in revenue by selling each .xxx site for $60.
The decision could come as quickly as six months ending what has been a decade long battle for approval.
