The audience headed for the exit doors five minutes into Twitter CEO Evan Williams keynote at SXSW. “This Twitter keynote is VERY boring. Can’t tell if it’s [Williams] or lack of provocative questions from [Haque],” tweeted @smc90.
“For me, this is kind of shocking. I came to the Williams keynote directly from a solo appearance upstairs… There, the room was electric throughout and loud applause and laughter was more common than any other sentiment”, said blogger Gary Vaynerchuk.
The keynote was billed as the biggest highlight at SXSW but it bombed badly. “This is a real shame. There’s no question that the Williams keynote was one of the most anticipated talks of this year’s SXSW, and certainly a selling point for conference organizers. The question is, how do you make a talk like this interesting if the subject–Williams in this case–isn’t the most interesting speaker in the world”, wrote Daniel Terdimen.
“This Keynote provides much needed mental rest for sxsw attendees… Almost a buddhist retreat”, tweeted @convagency.

SXSWi is like that. Some of the best talks in the world, often by folks you've never heard of, and then some real bombs, often by folks you HAVE heard of!

Unfortunately having the coolest products on the world doesn't make you cool, nor interesting as a speaker. That's why people like this who are hired as specialists need to do the same. Hire someone who can coach them and build a great presentation for them. My first clue, who wants to watch someone sit on a couch at an excitingly charged event like SXSW.
