Gen Y Mothers Use Social Networks For Parenting
By Reshma Kumar at September 16, 2008 2 CommentsSocial networks have apparently permeated the parenting world as well. In a study by NewMedia Metrics and The Parenting Group, although both gen X and Y mothers consider the internet a key resource for parenting information, gen Y mothers seem to prefer the wisdom of the crowds opting for social networks, blogs, and video sharing sites.
Gen Y moms create their own content and their top three activities include reading blogs, participating in an online community of moms, and creating and sharing their own video. In contrast, gen X moms are overall less digital media inclined preferring to to engage in task-oriented activities such as shopping online and uploading photos. The top three online activities of gen X moms are using a photo site, rating and reviewing products, and shopping. “This generational dichotomy indicates a shift in the way marketers should be targeting the next new generation of moms online,” according to The Parenting Group.
The study was based on a pool of 847 mothers.

I can validate this - our application on Facebook (schoolspace) and website (www.schoolparent.net) that have Mom users shows a distinct difference in parents behavior based on the grades of their children. Parents with kids in younger grades are certainly more into communities.
Social networking for moms is exploding for both Gen X and Gen Y. In the last five years we at BigTent have see the rise of the Mothers’ Clubs and there are now millions of moms participating. They come at a critical time of life when your whole world gets turned upside down - and moms help each other with everything from potty training to sharing referrals for plumbers. Trusted relationships between mothers are nothing new, but having the ability to reach out or offer help any time of day or night via the Internet (or text message, etc.) is new.
