Creator of Web Says Flaw in Internet Explorer

By Reshma Kumar at September 10, 2008 7 Comments

Inventor of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee,  says that Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser is falling behind other browsers – such as Firefox,  Safari, and others – in the support of scalable vector graphics (SVG). “If you look around at browsers, you’ll find that most of them support scalable vector graphics. I’ll let you figure out which one has been slow in supporting SVG.” said Berners-Lee.

SVG image files scale without degrading in image quality and resolution. Maps are popularly created as SVG file formats. Currently, the IE browser, including the recently released version8 beta, requires an Adobe plug-in to be downloaded before IE can show SVG objects. The challenge for Microsoft is that come Jan. 1, Adobe will be ending its support of the SVG plug-in and it’s unclear if it will even be available for download.

Microsoft supported another format for vector graphics, called Vector Markup Language, or VML. However, the World Wide Web Consortium, which Berners-Lee heads, recommended SVG in 2001. “SVG support is something that we have been evaluating for some time,” Microsoft said in a statement. “We recognize the demand for vector graphics from Web developers, and realize this is a high-priority demand.”

Many people didn’t care about Microsoft, but did about its products. But as those get more and more behind and limiting, that’s changing. See for example what no SVG support means, what things IE users are missing out on: http://svg.startpagina.nl

I stopped using explorer 3 years ago and can’t go back. M$ had its chance to control the browser marketing, but this looks like another sign that its on its way out of dominance.

I think that Microsoft is right to keep VML.
Cause this format is really superior.
