U.S. To Top Mobile Web Market

The American zest for mobile Web usage is increasing and outpacing Europe quickly. According to data released today by Bango, a mobile analytics and mobile Internet access provider, the U.S. is expected to top mobile Web usage by the end of the month. Bango’s July data shows that UK was at the top of the list at 19.35%, the US at 18.88%, India at 10.82%, South Africa at 8.82% and Indonesia at 4.08%. The company expects the August numbers to show the U.S. has surpassed the U.K. in usage with approximately a 23% share of the total mobile Internet market and the U.K. with just upwards of 20%. This data is based on users accessing the mobile web via Bango and the number of users visits to mobile sites per country.
“The USA share of the browsing market has grown as an increasing number of phones come with bigger screens and service contracts that include unlimited internet access. We fully expect the US will overtake the UK in this ranking as early as this month.” - Adam Kerr, VP of Bango.
This growth is being attributed to U.S. mobile carriers getting on the 3G networks bandwagon which facilitate the transmission of mobile Web-based video at faster rates, which U.K. and other European-based carriers did years ago. Plus, newer handsets available in the U.S. offer higher quality reception of video and music and cheaper subscriber plans.
Expect more money being thrown into this space. eMarketer predicts mobile advertising will grow fourfold from $1.6 billion in 2008 to $6.4 billion in 2012, with Internet video becoming the most lucrative mobile ad channel by 2010.
