India Group Suing Google For Profiting From Sex Advertising

In China, India, and other Asian countries, there is a strong preference for baby boys and many services have popped up that use modern ultrasound technology that determine the sex of a fetus in minutes. If is the fetus is determined to be a girl, it usually ends in an abortion.
The outfits providing such services are using Google Adwords primarily to reach customers and Indian activists are taking Google to court for profiting from the death of millions of baby girls. The group is alleging that ad products for enabling expectant parents to learn their fetus’ gender have been very profitable for Google. Microsoft and Yahoo were also named in the suit. “These companies are making a lot of money by doing highly targeted and selective advertising of these products,” said Sabu George, an activist leading the campaign. Our petition seeks to block these advertisements.”
BusinessWeek reports that Google won’t comment about the merits of the case itself, saying it is still waiting to receive the court’s Don’t Be Evil request. “We have not yet received the petition from the Supreme Court,” says Google spokesman John Pinette in an email reply to a query from BusinessWeek, “but we take local laws seriously and will review the petition carefully.”
This can because a public relations nightmare for Google if the U.S. pro-life movement takes similar actions here in the U.S. and other special interest groups start targeting Google to selling negative keywords. It could seriousl hurt Google’s hugely profitable advertising engine.
