The Power of Real Time
By Joseph Hunkins at June 02, 2008 0 CommentsMany with brokerage accounts have had access to real-time stock quotes for some time, rather than the much more common 15 minute delayed quotes. However Google’s decision to provide real time quotes represents a big step forward. Moving to more real-time data is really an important cornerstone of Web 2.0 and it has been lacking in many areas for several reasons.
In fact normal Google search results now often suffer from being somewhat “stale” because much blog content is often omitted from those results for days or even longer, and it is often in blogs that much of the new high quality content is generated. Google to their credit has been working on this problem for some time, and it is complicated by the overwhelming number of “splogs”, or spam blogs, that exist solely for the purpose of tricking Google into ranking the splog or partner blogs higher than they would otherwise rank.
But big kudos to Google for the real time quotes. In fact if Yahoo and other financial networks don’t quickly copy this approach it could result in a mass defection of stock watchers to Google Finance which was late to the game and therefore has not been as widely adopted as it might otherwise have been. This move could change that.
